This is a mandatory northern birding trip that all birders & Nature Lovers should do. This bird trip includes a big variety of endemics and highly threatened bird species that are found along this route. Amazing landscapes following the majestic Dry Marañon Valley with the Marañon specialties plus some Highland bird species around Cajamarca to then jump to the northern tropical forest along the Alto Mayo reserve in San Martin.

PD: Our commitment with your stay in Peru is to arrange all the details from the very begining to your last day with us. So in order to work these details we would appreciate, you let us know the specific time of your Lima arrival to work with it.

DAY BY DAY TOUR
DAY 01

The usual international arrival flights to Peru are late in the afternoon, that does not give us much time to do anything rather than organise details for the following day and go for nice dinner.
In case you are arriving early this day, please let us know to work in advance and see what we can do for the day.

DAY 02 .- LIMA FLIGHT TO CAJAMARCA – SANGAL VALLEY - CUMBEMAYO

In less tan an hour flight you are in Cajamarca city at 2700 masl, aprox. This is a nice town from where we will be moving to get our bird specialties, 02 days will be spent here in order to get the birds we want. Our meals will depend on how long o far we will be moving per day, some of them will be taken around the main town and others along the bird trip.

Gray Bellied Comet, Striated Earthcreeper, the Cajabambae race of Rusty Crowned Tit Spinetail & the rare Rufous Breasted Warbling Finch, Plain Tailed Warbling Finch & Rufous Eared Brush Finch.

DAY 03 .- CAJAMARCA BIRDING SITES – SAN MARCOS – JESUS – ABRA GAVILAN

Early departure for San Marcos Town where we can get some more birds to our list, this first bird place is at only 02 hours driving from Cajamarca City, where birding is just along the road to then move to Jesus Town to add some more birds and finally go to Abra Gavilan for our last birding day. Just to reminds you that the birding car will always be around.

TARGET BIRDS:: Great Spinetail, Black Metaltail, Rufous Backed Inca Finch, Unicolored Tapaculo, Black Necked Woodpecker & Buff Bridled Inca Finch.

DAY 04 .- CAJAMARCA TO CELENDIN – SANTA ROSA – LLANGUAT

At 03 hours driving the paved road from Cajamarca to Celendin with some birding stop along the road, where we can add some more birds to our Northern Peru Bird List. This road is the entrance to the Marañon Valley and the place we need for the Marañon specialties. Once we get to Celendin we continue with some more places like LLanguat or Santa Rosa for some others dry forest birds around the valley. Later on we drive back to our Hotel at Celendin town.

TARGET BIRDS:: Chesnut Backed Thornbird, Marañon Crescenchest, Marañon Pigeon, Golden Rumped Euphonia, Drab Seedeater.

DAY 05 .- CELENDIN & THE MARAÑON VALLEY SPECIALTIES

Another full day birding the Marañon valley looking for the specialties around plus the wondelful view of the valley and river.

TARGET BIRDS:: Gray Winged Inca Finch, Marañon Thrush, Yellow Faced Parrolet, Purple Collared Woodstart, Spot Throated Hummingbird, White Winged Black Tyrant, Scarlet Fronted Parakeet and many more.

DAY 06 .- CELENDIN TO LEYMEBAMBA – CALLA CALLA PASS

Long driving day from Celendin to Leymebamba and good birding stops along this vegetated road that will provides us with good birds since we start getting into the northern amazon forest. So birding along the road can be very good with good numbers of new bird species for our Peru northern Bird list. At Leymebamba we can visit the feeders to get some cool views and shots from many hummmingbirds species.

TARGET BIRDS:: Russet Mantled Softail, White Chinned Thistletail, Coppery Metaltail, Leymebamba Antpitta, Blackish Tapaculo, Sapphire Vented Puffleg.

DAY 07 .- LEYMEBAMBA HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS – UTCUBAMBA RIVER

Nice morning to enjoy the hummingbird feeders plus some birding along the Utcubamba River with very nice birding stops and mix flocks. Another full birding day to slowly penetrate the northern tropical forest.

TARGET BIRDS::Speckle Chested Piculet, Cock of the Rock, Sword Billed Hummingbird, Green and Black Fruiteater, Rufous Capped Antshrike, Rufous Winged Tyrannulet, Koepcke’s Screech Owl, Little Woodstart.

DAY 08 .- LEYMEBAMBA – HUEMBO CENTER

Another birding day along the utcubamba river to finally reach the main highway – North Panamerican Highway ( Belaunde Terry Road ). This road will finally takes us to the northern birding tropical forest. Good birding along this road with very special places for target and Endemic birds.

TARGET BIRDS::Marveleous Spatuletail, Rainbow Startfronlet, Andean Emerald, Bronzy Inca, Pale Eyed Thrush, Gray Chinned Hermit, Black Capped Tyrannulet, Maroon Chested Ground Dove.

DAY 09 .- HUEMBO CENTER – ALTO NIEVA CENTER

Another early walk around before leaving the center to get some bird species that are found into the trails. We will probably leave the place after lunch this way we have the chance to bird the morning and get the birds that move around this nice property. Our next place can takes us 03 hours going at our own pace.

TARGET BIRDS:: Buff Browed Foliage Gleaner, Buff Fronted Foliage Gleaner, White Crowned Tapaculo, Peruvian Tyrannulet, Sickle Winged Guan, Cinammon Screech Owl.

DAY 10 .- FUNDO ALTO NIEVA – BIRDING AROUND THE PROPERTY

The first night we arrive we can straight go and try for the Lodge specialty, The Owlet. Giving us another chance the following night in case we do not see it the first night, this palce also has a special área with hummmingbird feeders that can be really good for Bird photography.

TARGET BIRDS:: Long Wiskered Owlet, Royal Sunangel, Rufous Vented Whitetip, Ochre Fronted Antpitta, Long Tailed Sylph, Brown Tinamou, Black Faced Tanager.

DAY 11 .- FUNDO ALTO NIEVA – AGUAS VERDES RESERVE – MOYOBAMBA

Another early start to see One of the Endemic Anpittas that have been fed by the staff, this bird is always a challenge but once you see it it really worth it. Right after that we can try for some more walk around the property to get some more birds before leaving the Center and head to our next stop with more Hummingbirds feeders and extra target birds.

TARGET BIRDS:: Rusty Tinged Antpitta, Cinammon Breasted Tody Tyrant, Bar Winged Wood Wren, Golden Headed Quetzal, Rufous Vented Tapaculo, Orange Billed Sparrow, Little Tinamou, Band Bellied Owl, Rufous Breasted Wood Quail.

DAY 12 .- WAKANKY LODGE – HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS & MIRADOR DE MOYOBAMBA

This is a womderful place for birders since the área with feeders give you a big variety of hummingbirds and Hermits plus the amazing Coquette. Nice place for bird photography and some other birds that can be easily found around this lovely property.

TARGET BIRDS:: Rufous Crested Coquette, Mishana Tyrannulet, Huallaga Tanager, Tataupa Tinamou, Blue Winged Parrotlet, Long Billed Woodcreeper, Mouse Colored Tyrannulet, Black Throated Hermit, White Lined Tanager, White Necked Jacobin, Brown Violetear, Violet Headed Hummingbird amd many more.

DAY 13 .- MOYOBAMBA & TARAPOTO SPECIALTIES

Our last birdy morning around the property at Moyobamba getting some extra bird species and then head to our last birding spot at Tarapoto. Along the road we have some more bird stops that will increase our bird list with very good target birds. Once we reach Tarapoto city we can also move around the main birding areas.

TARGET BIRDS:: Oilbirds, Ashy Headed Greenlet, Pearly Vented Tody Tyrant, Huallaga Antshrike, Rusty Backed Antwren, White Eyed Tody Tyrant, Yellow Breasted Flycatcher, Cumb Duck.

DAY 14 .- TARAPOTO SPECIALTIES – FLIGHT BACK TO LIMA

Our last morning around Tarapoto can be very productive, headind the road a bit far from the main town we can find very nice birding areas with very special birds with limited ranged distribution, a nice birdy morning before leaving our Northern Birding trip.

TARGET BIRDS:: Planalto Hermit, Solitary Black Cacique, Rufous Fronted Thornbird, Dotted Tanager, Oriole Blackbird, Cliff Flycatcher, Flammulated Pygmy Tyrant, Hoatzin.
