THE BEST OF MANU ROAD

DAY 01. CUSCO – HUACARPAY LAKE & COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE

Breakfast and we will start our Tropical Birding Adventure into Manu Road. We will drive for 25 minutes South of Cusco to reach Huacarpay Lake; this natural Andean Marsh provides great chances for our target species, where we will spend some time birding along the road surrounding the lake, then we will try to get to Paucartambo Village for lunch. After that, we will drive the upper road to Acjanaco Pass where Manu National Park begins. After the Pass, our birding time will be even better for mixed flocks of tanagers and other bird families. We will arrive late in the afternoon to our first lodge along Manu road.

Andean Birds Species:The Endemics Rusty Fronted Canastero & Bearded Mountaineer. Some more birds like Andean Tinamou, Cinereous Conebill, Giant Hummingbird, Golden Billed Saltator, Eared Dove, Streak Fronted Thornbird, Puna Teal, Chiguanco Thrush, Puna Ibis, Variable Hawk, Andean Swallow, Peruvian Sierra Finch, Greenish Yellow Finch, Mountain Caracara, Blue and Yellow Tanager and many more.

DAY 02. FULL DAY BIRDING AROUND THE LODGE & THE FAMOUS COCK OF THE ROCK LECK

Early visit to one of the most popular Cock of the Rock Lek along Manu Road, then some birding on the way and back for breakfast. After that, we will keep birding for the rest of the afternoon. Of course you will have some time off to enjoy the hummingbird feeders just sitting by the Dinning room.

Tropical Birds Species: The Endemic Cerulean Capped Manakin. Some others like Spotted Nightingale-Thrush, Chesnut Breasted Wren, Brown Tinamou, Being Lucky Peruvian Piedtail (endemic) speckled Hummingbird, Palm Tanager, Amazonian Umbrella Bird, Spotted Barbtail, Two Banded Warbler, White Backed Fireeyes, Golden Tanager, White-eyed Parakeet, White Winged Tanager, Fulvous Breasted Flatbill and Crested Quetzal.

DAY 03. COCK OF THE ROCK LODGE – VILLA CARMEN STATION

Breakfast and then we will start moving down Manu Road with some more stops on the way for some target bird species since the area has nice Gadua Bamboo patches plus nice Riparian and second Growth forest for unique birds.

Finally, we will arrive at Pilcopata Town and head to Guadalupe Lodge driving along Guadalupe River, this area has beautiful bird species since is covered by Mauritia Palm Trees and River Edge Forest. Nice place to see Macaws and Parrots. It ha s a perfect combination of Hilly Forest with Lowland Tropical Forest, that makes this place unique for what we are looking for.

Amazonian Birds Species: The Endemic Black Backed Tody Flycatcher and others like Emerald Toucanet, white Browed Antbird, Blue Headed Parrot, Chesnut Fronted Macaw,The Beautiful Rufous Crested Coquette, Golden Tailed Sapphire, Redish Hermit, Blue Tailed Emerald, Blue Crowned Trogon, Buff Throated Woodcreeper, Band Tailed Manakin, Solitary Cacique, Rufous Breasted Piculet, Fine Barred Piculet, Long Tailed Hermit, Yellow Browed Sparrow and more.

DAY 04. VILLA CARMEN – MACHUWASI LAKE

Early breakfast to then go for a nice morning visit to a small but beautiful oxbow lake for interesting Tropical Bird species like Horned Screamer, Blackish Rail, Black Capped Donacobius, Lesser Kiskadee, Orange-Backed Troupial and the Amazing chicken-size bird Hoatzin. After this nice visit to this birding water spot we slowly move back to our lodge with some more stops on the way getting some more birds since the road to the lodge is covered by nice Gadua Bamboo that will give us Bamboo specialist like Bamboo Antshrike, Yellow Breasted Warbling Antbird, Yellow Billed Nunbird, Dot Winged Antbird and White Lined Antbird.

Target Birds Species: Blue Headed Macaw and the New Endemic Golden Bellied Warbler. Band Bellied Owl, Black Banded Woodcreeper, Green and Rufous Kingfisher, Chesnut Eared Aracari, Green Backed Trogon, Common Scaled Antbird, Humaita Antbird, Blue and Yellow Macaw, Plain Softail, Spix’s Guan, Blue Throated Piping Guan, Hauxwell Thrush, Band-Tailed Manakin, Red Billed Scythebil, Rusty Fronted Tody-Flycatcher, Rufous Motmot, Cinereous Tinamou, Slate-Colored Seedeater, Blue Black Grossbeak , Yellow Crested Tanager and others.

DAY 05. VILLA CARMEN STATION – WAYQECHA STATION

Another early breakfast and then we start heading up to the Mountains at Cloud Forest. On the way, we already have some special stops for our target birds. Pretty much the whole day birding along Manu Road into the Cloud Forest and our lunch will be taken in a nice area along the road, enjoying the beautiful landscape an birds. Different birds since we will find new vegetation such us Chusquea Bamboo for some Hemispingus and Warblers. Mix species flocks for Mountain Tanagers, Tyrannulets, Tree Runners, Conebills and more.

Target Birds Species: The Endemic Parodis Hemispingus & Red and White Antpitta. Some others like Bolivian Tyrannulet, White-Banded Tyrannulet, Streaked Tuftedcheek, Capped Conebill, Grass Green Tanager, Common Bush-Tanager, Crimson Mantled Woodcreeper, Golden-Headed Quetzal, Andean Solitaire, Blue Banded Toucannet, Glossy Black Thrush, Fawn Breasted Tanager, Barred Fruiteater, Pale Legged Warbler, Solitary Eagle, Oleaginous Hemispingus and Black and Chesnut Eagle and more.

DAY 06. FULL DAY BIRDING WAYQECHA STATION

Full day birding along Manu road getting the species that move at Cloud Forest and trying for special birds found at this elevation.

Target Birds Species: The Endemic Inca Flycatcher. Others like Handsome Flycatcher, Rufous-backed Treehunter, Tyrannine Woodcreeper, Band-Tailed Fruiteater, Scarlet Bellied Mountain Tanger, Puna Wren, Citrine Warbler, Andean Guan, Amethyst Throated Sunangel, Violet Throated Startfronlet, Black Throated Tody-Tyrant, Rufous Antpitta, White Bellied Woodstar, Gray Browed Brush-Finch, Fulvous Wren and many more.

DAY 07. WAYQECHA & BACK TO CUSCO

Early birding along the road for birds we could have missed the day before. This area has nice mix flocks. After this early birding then we start moving back to Cusco
