DAY 01.- LIMA FLIGHT TO TARAPOTO CITY – RICURICOCHA LAGOON – TUNNELS AT CORDILLERA ESCALERA.
Just 01-hour flight to bird the very best of north peru birds and get targets like Asy headed greenlet with very limited distribution in Peru, then Sulphur bellied tyrant manakin, Rusty backed antwren, Pearly vented tody tyrant, Mouse colored tyrannulet, Yellow headed caracara, Barred antshrike, Olive faced flatbill, Spot breasted woodpecker, Rusty fronted tody flycatcher, Dull colored grassquit and many more. Then we move to another bird spot for the special Plumbeous euphonia and dotted tanager. If time permits, we can visit the Koepke’s hermit site.
DAY 02.- PLATAFORMA TOWN AND SCARLET BANDED BARBET
Birdwatching best of north peru birds takes you to and incredible birding spot known as Plataforma town for the main 02 targets and this bird spot requires between 03 to 04 hours driving to finally arrive to this famous bird birding spot. Here the 02 main targets are the Famous Scarlet banded barbet and Cordillera azul antbird. Along the way we also have the chance to get some extra birds that inhabit the huge rice fields you can see along the road and this habitat bring extra birds like Brazilian teal, Snail kite, Western cattle heron, Black necked stilt, Smooth billed ani, Wattle jacanas and others. Once at Plataforma forest, our afternoon will be spent mainly for the Scarlet banded barbet and while looking for the main target we can also get extra really good birds like Olive chested flycatcher, Epaulet oriole, Blue winged mountain tanager, Line antshrike, Versicolored barbet, Yungas manakin, Yellow breasted antwren, Blue browed tanager, Paradise tanager, Golden eared tanager, Green honeycreeper, Streaked xenops, Marble faced bristle tyrant, Peruvian tyrannulet, and many more birds heard like Scaled antpitta, Lineated foliage gleaner, Chesnut capped brushfinch, Chesnut tipped toucanet, White crowned tapaculo and Sub-tropical pygmy owl. Later at night we can get some night birds like Ocellated poorwill, Long tailed potoo and Band bellied owl.
DAY 03.- PLATAFORMA ZUL ANTBIRD & PLATAFORMA BIRDS
This full day will give us one of the main targets around Plataforma forest and this time we have the whole morning to clean up Cordillera azul antbird and the rest of the bird species like Yellow throated spadebill, Buff tailed sicklebill, Blackish pewee, Scarlet breasted fruiteater, White throated woodpecker, Blue rumped manakin, Rufescent antshrike, Rufous capped nunlet and many more birds.
Late in the afternoon while birdwatching the best of north peru birds we still have extra birds like green and gold tanager, Ash browed spinetail, Wing barred piprites, Masked tityra, Magpie tanager, Ochre breasted antpitta and then we try for the special Foothill screech owl.
DAY 04.- LAST BIRDING MORNIG AROUND PLATAFORMA FOREST – TARAPOTO CITY.
Before breakfast we can still have some extra birds like Gray tailed piha, Plataforma woodcreeper, South-american leaftosser, the special White fronted tyrannulet, White throated quail dove, Rose fronted parakeets, Lanceolated monklet, Dark breatsed spinetail and many others. Then nice breakfast to drive back to Tarapoto city with some more bird stops on the way at the lower part in order to get the special Hoatzin, plus some extra birds at the big rice fields along the road where we can add more birds like Comb ducks, Oriole blackbird, Large billed tern if lucky Pearl kite that sometimes if found along the road.
DAY 05.- TARAPOTO CITY – MOYOBAMBA TOWN & HUMMINGBIRD FEEDERS – MISHANA TYRANNULET – PAINTED MANAKIN
This time we keep birding the best of north peru birds from Tarapoto to Moyobamba where we will do a short birding stop for Oilbirds, this particular place holds a big Oilbird colony where we can photograph and see many of these birds. Then we continue to another bird spot known as morro de calzada where we try for a roosting spot for the special Stigyan owl and at the same time we try for the uncommon Mishana tyrannulet. While looking for these birds we can also get the other target, the famous Painted manakin and other birds birds like Pygmy antwren, Forest elania, Paradise tanager, Greater yellow headed vulture plus many more. Our afternoon will be spent around Waqanky lodge where there is a nice Hummingbird feeder and habitat for birds like Rufous crested coquette, Great billed hermit, Golden tailed sapphire, Turquoise tanager, Olivaceous woodcreeper, Purple honeycreeper, Fork tailed woodnymph, White necked jacobin, Hauxwell’s thrush and many more.
DAY 06.- MOYOBAMBA BIRDS & ARENA BLANCA RESERVE – BLACK BELLIED TANAGER – RUFOUS FRONTED THORNBIRD
Last morning and early birding at el Mirador Tahuishco, where we can have Riparian parakeet, Coraya wren, Rufous fronted thornbird, Black bellied tanager, Lafesnaye’s piculet, Stripe chested antwren, Barred antshrike, Varzea thrush, Chesnut eared aracari and many others. Then along the road and heading to the other lodge, we will do some pther bird stops for Burrowing owl, Spotted rail, Black billed seed finch, Black capped donacobius, Rufous sided crake, Slender billed kite and others. Afetrnoon birding around Arena blanca reserve, where we spend the afternoon with the hummingbird feeders and get Brown violetear, Great billed hermit, Hauxwell thrush, Rufous crested coquette, Many spotted hummingbird and many more birds including the little mockeys, Andean saddle backed tamarin. late at night we try for Tropical screech owl.
DAY 07.- ARENA BLANCA RESERVE BIRDS – LONG WHISKERED OWLET. -ALTO NIEVA LODGE
Birding with the best of north peru birds includes some specialties like Cinereous tinamou, Little tinamou, Orange bellied sparrow and big group of Rufous breasted wood quail. Then we still birding best of north peru birds while spending some time at the feeders with good birds like Little woodstar, Amethys woodstar, Blue fronted lancebill and the famous Rufous crested coquette. Late in the afternoon we continue with our bird tour at Alto nieva lodge where we got some more cool birds like Metallic green tanager, Blue winged mountain tanager, Peruvian racket-tail, Spectacled bristle tyrant, Bronzy inca, Flame crested tanager, Violet fronted brilliant and many more. Then we head to Progreso town but before we had another bird stop for the famous and uncommon Royal sunangel, getting good view of it, plus a great number of Scaly naped amazon, couple of White capped dipper by the river and some targets like Johnson’s tody flycatcher, Southern emerald toucanet, big flock of White capped dipper and we finished with a great view of the rare Long whiskered Owlet.
DAY 08.- ANTPITTA FEEDERS & ABRA PATRICIA FOREST – POMACOCHAS
Another great day and this time at Amazonas region where we can get some good views from 02 endemic birds at the same spot, these are Rusty tinged and Ochre fronted antpitta. Some more good birds around like Bar winged wood wren, Cinnamon breasted tody tyrant, Royal sunangel, Fawn breasted brilliant, Red billed parrot, Ornate flycatcher, Uniform antshrike and many others at Alto nieva reserve. Then we go for some more birds along the road and bird abra patricia forest and try for Rufous capped antshrike, Yellow breasted brush finch, Johnson’s tody flycatcher, Barred becard, Olivaceous siskin, White collared jay, Scarlet rumped cacique, Rufous browed peppershrike, Green and black fruiteater, Peruvian tyrannulet and many more. Abra patricia forest gives you uncommon birds like Tyrannine woodcreeper, Collared inca, Golden headed quetzal, the common migrant Broad winged hawk, Chesnut crested cotinga, Southern emerald toucanet and more. We finish our day at Pomacochas lake birding extra birds such as Peruvian meadowlark, Mouse gray flycatcher, Little ground tyrant, Vermilion flycatcher, Plumbeous rail, Black crowned night heron and many others that includes white throated screech owl.
DAY 09.- CRESTA SAN LORENZO – PALE BILLED ANTPITTA – MARVELOUS SPATULETAIL
Another birdwatching day with the best of north peru birds at amazonas region, this time we visit San Lorenzo town where we bird and walk at the famous Cresta san Lorenzo, this place has very good birds like Pale billed Antpitta, Utcubamba Tapaculo, Gray browed wren, Lacrimose tanager, Johnson’s tody flycatcher, Streaked tuftedcheek, Superciliared hemispingus, White sided flowerpiercer, Slaty finch, Violet throated starfrontlet, Barred fruiteater and many others. After having good time at this hotspot, we then moved at the lower part and bird the road parallel to Chido river, where we can try for the beautiful Torrent duck, Torrent tyrannulet and White capped dipper. Our afternoon will be at the Marvelous spatuletail spot in order to get some cool views and shots to then finish at beautiful lodge located right in front of Gocta fall, a popular place for nature and Chachapoyas culture lovers. Around this property we can get some good birds like Buff bellied tanager and Marañon thrush.
DAY 10.- ATUEN ROAD – RED HOODED TANAGER -LEYMEBAMBA ANTPITTA – CALLA CALLA PASS BIRDS – LEYMEBAMBA TOWN
Early departure to keep adding some more Peru birds like Little woodstar, Gray chinned hermit, Andean emerald, White bellied woodstar, White bellied hummingbird, Lesser violetear and Marañon crescentchest. Some more targets along the famous Utcubamba river and valley such as Peruvian pigeon, Spot throated hummingbird, Western wood pewee, Black chested buzzard eagle, speckled breasted wren, Speckled chested piculet and Black necked woodpecker. Then we bird Atuen road where we can get some more cool birds like Black capped tyrannulet, Mountain caracara, Brown bellied swallow, Mitred parakeet, the colorful Rainbow startfrontlet, Red hooded tanager, the endemics Russet mantled Softail and Leymebamba antpitta.others. To finish our afternoon we head to the main highway where we get extra birds such as Drab hemispingus, Blue backed conebill, Purple backed thornbill, Andean flicker, Red crested cotinga, Tawny rumped tyrannulet, Scarlet bellied mountain tanager, Coppery metaltail, Chachapoyas antpitta and others. Then we had a great night at Rangra wasi lodge with great view at mountain humid forest where we can add Koepcke’s screech owl.
DAY 11.- CALLA CALLA PASS – NEBLINA TAPACULO – JELKI’S CHAT TYRANT – CHESNUT CROWNED ANTPITTA – LEYMEBAMBA TOWN
Another extra day around leymebamba to get some missing birds and while birdwatching the bird spots, get the following targets like Neblina tapaculo, Jelki’s chat tyrant, Grass wren, line checkeed spinetail, Yellow scarfed tanager, Chesnut crowned antpitta and many others that are only found at the best of north peru birds.
DAY 12.- MARAÑON BIRDS – YELLOW FACED PARROTLET – CHESNUT BACKED THORNBIRD – INCA FINCHES – CELENDIN TOWN
Birding the best of north peru birds along Marañon habitat where we can get Marañon sparrow, Marañon tyrannulet, Marañon gnatcatcher, Buff bridled inca finch, Purple collared woodstar, White winged black tyrant, Chesnut backed thornbird, Gray winged inca finch and Yellow faced parrotlet. Some more specialties like Black lored yellowthroat, Golden grosbeak, green jay, Bare faced ground dove, Spot throated hummingbird, Brown crested flycatcher, Fulvous faced scrub tyrant, Jelki’s chat tyrant, Long tailed mockingbird, Peruvian pygmy owl and many more!! After having great birding time along this bird route, we spent our night at Celendin town, nice little place with everything you need.
DAY 13.- CELENDIN BIRDS – CAJAMARCA ANTPITTA – PLAIN TAILED WARBLING FINCH – CHONTA RIVER – GRAY BELLIED COMET – CAJAMARCA CITY
Today we focus on the last extra hotspots for Cajamarca specialties like Gray bellied comet, White tailed shrike tyrant, Rufous naped ground tyrant, Rusty crowned tit spinetail, Cajamarca antpitta, Black crested tit tyrant, Plain tailed warbling finch, Black metaltail, tufted tit tyrant, Black tailed trainbearer and many more. Later this day we go for a grea dinner at Cajamarca downtown and spent our night at a very nice hotel facing the main square!
DAY 14.- JESUS TOWN – GREAT SPINETAIL & RUFOUS BACKED INCA FINCH
Best of north peru birds takes you to Jesus town for some bird where we drive for 01 hour to have the chance for the endemic Great spinetail, White winged black tyran, Buff bridled inca finch, Striped cuckoo, Purple collared woodstar, Croacking ground dove, Black lored yellowthroat, Fulvous faced scrub tyrant and many more!
Then we jumped onto Abra Gavilan birding spot for the special and hard to see, the famous Rufous backed inca finch, Green tailed trainbearer, Tufted tit tyrant, the uncommon Unicolored tapaculo and many others. Then we finish the day at Cajamarca city airport.

Some details you need to know about this bird trip are:
- We use a modified track to do and go to Plataforma town, where the local hostal is basic with shared bathroon.
- The only hard walk would be at Cresta San lorenzo for the specialties like Pale billed antpitta, this trail reaches 3000m.
