04 DAYS BIRD TOUR WITH THE BEST BIRDS OF NORTH-EASTERN PERU
DAY 01.- TARAPOTO CITY – PLATAFORMA BIRDS & SCARLET BANDED BARBET
Early departure from Tarapoto city for at least 03 hours driving along the eastern foothills to finally arrive to 01 of the many little towns along this particular coffee road. On the way we can find huge rice field plantation that brings some good birds like Black necked stilt, Oriole blackbird, Comb duck, Brazilian teal, Snail kite, Wattled jacana, Limpkin, Peruvian meadowlark, smooth billed ani and many others. The idea is to arrive for lunch at this local but comfortable hostel that belongs to a local family, right after lunch the idea is to go out and search for the first target, Scarlet banded barbet and of course the other bird species like Yungas manakin, Yungas woodcreeper, Plataforma woodcreeper, Versicolored barbet, Peruvian tyrannulet, Olive chested flycatcher, Subtropical pygmy owl, Band bellied owl, long tailed potoo and many more.
DAY 02.- PLATAFORMA BIRDS – CORDILLERA AZUL ANTBIRD – PAINTED MANAKIN
Another early birding day to cover the other special birding hotspots for the special Cordillera azul antbird, Painted manakin, White fronted tyrannulet, Blackish pewee, Blue rumped manakin, Fiery throated fruiteater, Chesnut crowned gnateater, Slaty capped shrike vireo, lined antshrike, chesnut tipped toucanet and many more. Later at night we try for Foothill screech owl, Black banded owl, Ferruginous pygmy owl and more.
DAY 03.- PLATAFORMA TOWN – DRIVE BACK TO TARAPOTO CITY – PLUMBEOUS EUPHONIA – DOTTED TANAGER
Early departure to Tarpoto city in order to get the famous Hoatzin on the way back and have enough time to cover the bird spots for the uncommon Plumbeous euphonia and Dotted tanager. Along the main high way we can also get some very good bird mixed flocks where we can add Rusty winged antwren, Ivory billed aracari, Yellow lored tanager, Cliff flycatcher, Curl crested aracari, Orange winged amazon, Red billed parrot and many others. Later at night we search for the special Stigyan owl.
DAY 04.- TARAPOTO BIRDS – KOEPCKE’S HERMIT – ASHY HEADED GREENLET
Our last day we visit ACONAHBIK reserve, this area has some good birds around where we can add the endemic Koepcke’s hermit and Golden headed manakin plus some extra birds that visit the feeders they have like Gould’s jewelfront, Pink throated brilliant, Gray breasted sabrewing and more. Then we move to another birding spot for the restricted Asy headed greenlet, Rusty backed anwtren, Tataupa tinamou, Spot breasted woodpecker, Pearly vented tody tyrant, Barred antshrike, Sulphur bellied tyrant manakin and many more bird that inhabit second growth.
